Martin initially gave the learners an insight into CK21, the company, their services and clients. Through case studies he presented the varied projects which they have been involved in. He then continued by explaining CK21 and BIM and gave examples of the their BIM projects.
Martin explained the role of the structural engineer and what aspects of the design they were traditionally responsible for. He also explained structural performance and behaviour of structural elements including: forces; loads; and stability, Compression; tension; and bending, ultimate and serviceability limit state and finally foundations; columns; beams; trusses; stairs; walls; and basements.
Martin also explained to the learners that steel and concrete aren't the only materials which can be used as structure, he explained the properties of: timber; masonry; reinforced concrete; pre-stressed concrete; steel; and aluminium. He explained, consideration must be taken into the: strength; availability; cost; design life; weight; and span of any structural material before selecting it for their building.
Martin sat down with each team and went through a proposed structural design for each of the projects including all primary columns and beams, bracing, floors and foundations.
